Where Should You Sell Your Artwork? Licensing, Print-on-Demand & Wholesale—What’s Right for You?

You’ve created the work—now what?

Getting your art into the hands (and homes) of others is where the magic continues—but knowing how to do that can feel overwhelming.

So let’s break it down.

1. Art Licensing

Licensing means you allow a company to use your art on their products. You still own the rights—they just get permission to use it for a period of time, in a specific category, or region.

✔ Great for: Artists who want to see their work on products without managing manufacturing or fulfillment.
✔ Pros: Passive income potential, brand exposure, long-term opportunities.
✔ Consider: You’ll need a strong portfolio, contracts, and knowledge of usage terms.

2. Print-on-Demand (POD)

With POD, your art is printed on items (like mugs, shirts, or journals) only when a customer orders. You don’t hold inventory, and the platform handles fulfillment.

✔ Great for: Creatives who want to sell directly without upfront investment.
✔ Pros: No inventory costs, low startup barrier, easy to test designs.
✔ Consider: Margins can be lower, and quality control varies by platform.

3. Wholesale

Wholesale means selling your products in bulk to retail shops. You produce the inventory, set your wholesale pricing, and they resell in-store or online.

✔ Great for: Artists who create physical goods like journals, stationery, or gift wrap.
✔ Pros: Larger orders, direct buyer relationships, recurring revenue potential.
✔ Consider: You need inventory, packaging, and solid pricing strategy.

So… What’s the Best Path for You?

The beautiful thing is—you don’t have to choose just one. Many artists (myself included!) explore multiple paths and find what works best over time.

Start with one that feels the most aligned with your goals and capacity, then build from there.

And remember: there’s no “right” way—only your way.
